A training on writing, publication strategy & publication ethics

The course is intended for clinician-researchers and scientists with the aim to provide guidance on all aspects of writing and submitting papers in the field of life sciences and health research. During this training, Dr. John Carpenter will advise researchers on how to write sucessfull papers and abstracts, and will discuss common writing mistakes. Furthermore, he will also cover topics such as publication guidelines, publication strategy (how to plan a paper, choosing the right journal, understanding the peer review process) and publication ethics. The workshop will be highly interactive and propose many practical exercises.


Dr. John Carpenter is a brilliant freelance Medical Communications Consultant, Medical Writer and Trainer. 

John has a BSc in Pharmacology from the University of London and a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Alberta in Canada. He was Lecturer in Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manchester for many years before becoming a full time medical writer in 1992. He has worked in agencies in the northwest and the southeast of England, and has written about most types of drugs for most of the major international pharmaceutical companies.

John has contributed to several  pharmacology textbooks (Basic Pharmacology – text and illustrations four editions; Treatment of the Foot – chapter on pharmacology ; Anaesthetic Pharmacology – illustrations) and was the sole author of one textbook (Pharmacology from A to Z). He also co-authored one textbook with Professor Desmond Laurence (A Dictionary of Pharmacology and Allied Topicstwo editions).

John has been a member of the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) since its foundation and was a contributing member of the EMWA committee that drew up the EMWA Guidelines on the role of medical writers in developing peer-reviewed publications (Jacobs, A. & Wager, E. Cur Med Res Opin 2005; 21(2):317–321). He has also served on the Executive Committee and the Educational and Personal Development Committee. He is a regular contributor to EMWA conferences, running workshops on Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, Adverse Effects of Drugs, and Genetics.

Practical information

WHEN? From Wednesday 5th till Friday 7th of September 2018 from 9:00 to 17:00. Participants must commit to attend every day of the workshop!

LOCATION? UNamur, NARILIS meeting room, Place du Palais de Justice, Namur

COST? Free, including coffee and lunch.

LANGUAGE? The workshop will be given in English.

ACCREDITATION? A request for accreditation in Internal medicine / Ethics & Economics will be submitted to the INAMI.
