Namur Research Pole in Infectiology (NaRePI)

The Namur Research Pole in Infectiology brings together diverse scientific disciplines (i.e. microbiology, medicinal chemistry, veterinary medicine, cell biology, spatial epidemiology,....), spread over different UNamur research units, but all working directly or indirectly on infectiology topics. The networking of all these researchers within the Namur Research Pole in Infectiology generates an important potential for multidisciplinary collaborations. An additional asset of the pole is its close connection with the clinical Microbiology Laboratory and the Department of Infectious diseases of the CHU UCL Namur - Godinne.

Research topics

The Namur Research Pole in Infectiology supports research expanding our understanding of fundamental biological processes underlying pathogen infection, as well as advancing diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. Moreover, the pole has a particular emphasis on global public health threats, such as antimicrobial resistance.

Together, the researchers taking part in the Namur Research Pole in Infectiology cover diversified aspects of infectiology, including host-pathogen interactions, veterinary surveillance, virology, bacteriology, organic synthesis of bacterial sugars and enzyme inhibitors, protein crystallography, spatial epidemiology and animal-, tissue- and cell-based infection models.

Research projects ongoing at the UNamur:

  • Study of bacteria from molecular to cellular bacteriology and their relationship with eukaryotic hosts at the Research Unit in Biology of Microorganisms (URBM)
  • Study of animal infectious diseases (Schmallenberg virus, Ecchinoccous granulosus in Morocco, canine rabies in Africa,...) and viral genetics (herpesvirus, bunyavirus,...) at the Integrated Veterinary Research Unit (URVI)
  • Study of the link between viral infection and carcinogenesis at the Integrated Veterinary Research Unit (URVI)
  • Organic synthesis of (1) inhibitors of enzymes involved in the bacterial cell wall biosynthesis, bacterial sugars, (2) bacterial antiadhesive molecules and (3) inhibitors of the lipopolysaccharide biosynthetic pathway as antivirulence molecules at the Laboratory of bio-organic chemistry (CBO)
  • Protein crystallography and structure-based drug design at the Laboratory of structural biological chemistry (CBS)
  • In vitro modeling of dermatophytosis through fungal infection of reconstructed human epidermis at the Cell and Tissue Laboratory (LabCeTi)
  • Study of the crosstalks between mitochondria and intracellular bacterial pathogens at the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology (URBC)

Research projects ongoing at the CHU UCL Namur, Godinne (Microbiology Laboratory):

  • Development of in vitro diagnostic tools for the identification of bacterial species and the detection of antibiotic resistance markers
  • Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and molecular characterization of the mechanisms underlying the resistance phenotype
  • New drug discovery to overcome pan-drug resistant bacteria
