May 19-21, 2025

Learn how to better communicate your results and get published in high-impact scientific journals with Scriptoria's workshop in Journal Article Writing offered over 2.5 days of interactive, hands-on sessions.

Target audience

PhD students from UNamur and (clinician)-researchers from CHU UCL Namur, affiliated to NARILIS.  Previous  experience  having  published  as  a  first  author  is  welcome  but  not  required!

Course description

Scriptoria's   Journal   Article   Writing  Workshop  is  aimed  at  providing  early- career  researchers  the  theoretical  and  practical foundations to write high quality scientific  journal  articles  for  publication.  Our   bilingual   trainer   has   extensive  experience as an author, editor and peer reviewer and brings her insider knowledge to the sessions.

In this workshop, we will first cover how to plan,   develop   and   write   scientific  manuscripts for publication, using real-life examples from basic life sciences as well as clinical research.

Each session will focus on a different part of the manuscript and alternate with participant- led exercises and group discussions to put the learning into action.

We  will  then  focus  on  the  writing  and  editing  skills  that  you  need  to  succeed  as  a  researcher: being concise, being precise, improving your style, and finding the right tone for your audience. Once again, you will be provided with opportunities to put your editing skills to practise on real text.

The course will also teach participants project management for manuscripts and the formal writing and editing cycle – with practical tips on how to edit and proofread your own work and effectively use MS Word, reference managers, and free software tools. All participants will receive a comprehensive set of course notes in additional to useful templates and checklists.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to

  • Understand key issues underlying manuscript authorship, integrity and ethics
  • Identify the right target journal for their work
  • Describe the manuscript review process
  • Manage data and references
  • Present data clearly in tables and figures
  • Understand the requirements for each section of the journal article text
  • Draft a concise manuscript abstract and text
  • Edit their own work to improve organization and style and remove typos.
