“Deciphering receptor-mediated endocytosis by combined AFM and sub-diffraction microscopy”

Our team's research uses advanced microscopies to investigate the spatiotemporal organization of receptor-mediated endocytosis in physiology and during viral infection. A general feature of all endocytic pathways, clathrin-mediated or clathrin-independent, is that they involve all the inward bending of the plasma membrane to form endocytic vesicles through the organized work of a dedicated machinery. A burning question in this process that we aim to investigate is the exact mechanism(s) triggering the nucleation of the endocytic machinery to initiate the formation of endocytic structures. Through a combination of in vitro and cellular systems, we shed light on the role of two central components early arriving at endocytic structures, PI(4,5)P2 and the F-BAR protein FCHo1/2.
