Cover of the journal "Stem Cells and Development" by PhD student Anaïs Wanet

The review article written by Professor Patricia Renard and her PhD student, Anaïs Wanet, has impressed the chief editor of the journal "Stem Cells and Development" and was selected to be represented on the cover of the September 2015 issue.

Anaïs Wanet is a PhD student in the research group of Professor Patricia Renard within the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Cell Biology (URBC) of UNamur. Their latest review is entitled "Connecting Mitochondria, Metabolism, and Stem Cell Fate".

Anaïs' artwork is featured on the cover of the journal "Stem Cells and Development"! Her picture received very complimentory comments from the chief editor Graham C. Parker:

Cover Art: This issue's beautiful cover was prepared by first author, Anaïs Wanet, a PhD student in the laboratory of senior author Patricia Renard, a professor in the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, NAmur Research Institute for LIfe Sciences, University of Namur, Belgium, who here describes the computer-modified hand drawn image (Wanet et al., pp.1957–1971). The picture illustrates the interplay between mitochondria and the differentiation of stem cells. Stem cells, which are represented by multicolor circles, undergo a maturation of the mitochondrial network and a metabolic shift during their differentiation toward multiple cell types, represented by unicolor circles. Reciprocally, mitochondria and metabolism contribute to the regulation of pluripotency and differentiation. The mitochondrial cristae are represented by the lineage pathways connecting stem cells to differentiated cells, to depict the maturation of the mitochondrial network and function observed during the differentiation of stem cells.
