Leading experts and researchers gathered at the 2023 symposium of the Namur Thrombosis and Hemostasis Center

The Namur Thrombosis and Hemostasis Center (NTHC) builds on synergy between the Department of Pharmacy of the UNamur and different clinical disciplines involved in the management of thrombotic diseases from the CHU UCL Namur. NTHC partners aim to improve public health, by providing new validated tools for diagnosis of bleeding disorders, ensuring a better implementation of treatments, and assessing risk minimization strategies for the best use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). They also put a special emphasis on orphan diseases and unmet medical needs. Another objective is to share knowledge with all stakeholders, especially patients and healthcare providers.

Each year, the NTHC organizes an annual symposium which brings together leading experts, researchers and clinicians concerned with issues relating to thrombosis and hemostasis management. The last edition took place on the 27th of April 2023 at the Domaine de Ronchinne and gathered around 130 participants. During the first part of the meeting, the floor was given to young researchers from the NTHC to present their latest findings. The next sessions featured invited speakers. Prof. Thomas Lecompte (Nancy) gave an update on coagulation in the clinical laboratory. Prof. Aurélien Lebreton (Clermont-Ferrand) shed light on cirrhosis-induced coagulopathy. Prof. Serge Motte (ULB) addressed the therapeutic potential of factor XI inhibitors. Prof. Hugo ten Cate (Maastricht) discussed antithrombotic treatments in thrombocytopenic patients. Prof. Michael Mazighi (Paris) shared his experience on thrombolysis in patients under antithrombotic drugs. Finally, Prof. Charles-Marc Samama (Paris) closed the symposium with a talk on the perioperative management of DOACs and the 2022 ACCP guidelines.

The meeting was widely regarded as a great success, for the quality of the presentations, as well as the opportunities for networking and interdisciplinary collaboration. The organizers thank all speakers and participants for making this a highly interesting conference with fruitful discussions. Stay tuned for the next edition to be held in 2024!
